The Western Fijian people are descendants of Melanesian settlers who arrived in the region in about 500 B.C. They intermarried with the Polynesian residents who had arrived some 1,000 years early and adopted their culture.
Many Western Fijians continue to live in traditional thatch houses in villages along waterways and on the coast. They belong to clans and each village has a chief. Most of the Western Fijians are engaged in agriculture, growing sugar cane, cassava, rice, and bananas. They are known for their courtesy and hospitality.
Most of the Western Fijians are Christians – predominantly Methodist and Roman Catholic. Before the arrival of Christianity in the 19th century, the indigenous people practiced animism and valued the power of shamans. Some of these beliefs continue to linger.
